Dr. Noor-ul-Islam, Director General (Research), AARI, Faisalabad delivered inaugural address in which he appreciated the positive role of W-PEP in bridging the gap between CIMMYT and Pakistan wheat research. He also commended the role of CIMMYT in bringing about green revolution in Pakistan. The chief guest was also thankful to USDA for its generous support for the uplift of Pakistan Agriculture. He was also desirous to visit CIMMYT, Hqs. as soon as possible to enhance the collaboration process between Pakistan and CIMMYT 2. Dr. Rick Ward appreciated Dr. Noor-ul-Islam, Director General (Research), AARI, Faisalabad for sparing time to inaugurate the meeting on a short notice. He told the participants about the objectives of the meeting by saying that main focus would be on wheat breeding activities coupled with abiotic and biotic stresses prevalent during the current wheat growth season and their impact on the crop. He also stressed upon the shuttle breeding approach using places like Kaghan during summer time for enhancing the process of generation advancement and thus minimizing the time duration for release of a variety. Dr. Rick also mentioned the positive impact of W-PEP in terms of making financial resources available to the collaborating research institutes as a consequence which number of candidate lines was increased for National Uniform Trials (NUYT) from 20 to 24 in case of irrigated and from 12-15 in case of rainfed trials respectively.
